What Causes Anxiety

Smiling Woman

Anxiety can develop for many reasons. Some of the most common include:

  • Trauma or chronic stress
Difficult or unsafe experiences can leave the nervous system in a heightened “alert” state.

  • Car accidents (MVAs)
Even when physical injuries heal, the nervous system may stay reactive, sensitive or hypervigilant.

  • Life transitions and major changes
Moving, starting a new job, becoming a parent, divorce, or loss can create uncertainty and overwhelm.

  • Attachment wounds - they way our caregivers responded to us when we were little may have had a strong effects on how our nervous system responds to stress and anxiety and how capable we are at regulating these responses

  • Long-term pressure and burnout
When your responsibilities exceed your internal resources, the body may respond with anxiety.

  • Genetic and biological factors
Some people are naturally more sensitive or reactive to stress.

Anxiety is not a character flaw—it is a response from the body and mind trying to protect you.

How I Treat Anxiety

Relaxed Woman

I use a blend of somatic, cognitive and trauma-informed approaches to help you understand your anxiety and shift the patterns that keep it going.

EMDR Therapy

We help our brain process the events that have informed and shaped the anxiety response. We work towards creating a safe, regulated response to anxiety triggers and towards regulation of nervous system through adaptive processing.

Attachment-based Therapy

By identifying and healing relational patterns that we have learned in early years, we heal our ability to respond with anxiety, withdrawl or anger.

Polyvagal-Informed Therapy

We work with your nervous system—not against it. Through gentle techniques that increase safety, grounding and internal regulation, we help the body move out of fight-or-flight and into calm and connection.

Somatic Work

Your body holds valuable information. By tuning into physical sensations, tension patterns and emotional signals, we learn how to release stored stress and build body-based coping tools.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

We look at the anxious thoughts that repeat in your mind, explore where they come from, and learn skills to shift, soften or challenge them.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

You’ll gain emotional regulation skills, grounding strategies and distress-tolerance tools that help you navigate overwhelming moments more effectively.

Together, these approaches support whole-person healing—mind, body and nervous system.
