Counselling After A Car Accident
As a certified counsellor and a member of ICBC Recovery Network in Coquitlam, I offer effective counselling support for clients who are dealing with an impact of a recent car accident. Symptoms such as anxiety, panic, depression, overwhelm, frustration, fear of driving and more often appear quickly after an accident. Treatment for them can be very effective, especially if started soon after an accident. This service is pre-approved by ICBC and comes at no cost to you.
We can start immediately. You don't have to deal with it alone.
Common Symptoms After a Car Accident

A motor vehicle accident can be overwhelming, even if there were no serious physical injuries. Many people are surprised by how strongly it affects them emotionally and mentally—sometimes days, weeks, or even months later.
Common post-accident experiences include:
-
Anxiety or panic, especially while driving or riding in a vehicle
-
Fear of another accident or loss of control
-
Feeling on edge, hyper-alert, or easily startled
-
Avoidance of driving, social situations, or daily activities
-
Sleep disturbances or nightmares
-
Irritability, anger, or emotional numbness
-
Guilt or self-blame (“I should have reacted differently”)
-
Withdrawal from loved ones
-
Low mood, grief, or a loss of confidence
-
Physical tension, headaches, or chronic pain without a clear cause
-
PTSD-like symptoms: intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, uncontrollable emotions
These responses are normal reactions to an abnormal event. Your nervous system may still be trying to protect you, even though the danger has passed.
How Counselling Can Help

Counselling supports your nervous system and mind in processing what happened so you can feel safe again—both internally and in the world.
Therapy can help you:
-
Reduce anxiety, panic, and fear responses
-
Rebuild confidence with driving or daily routines
-
Process the emotional impact of the accident at your own pace
-
Release stored stress and tension in the body
-
Learn tools to regulate overwhelming emotions
-
Reduce avoidance and regain independence
-
Address guilt, self-blame, or intrusive thoughts
-
Restore a sense of safety, stability, and control
Recovery is not about “forgetting” the accident—it’s about helping your system learn that you are safe now.
How I Support Clients After Accidents (MVA)

I use an integrative, trauma-informed approach tailored to each client’s needs. Our work is collaborative, paced, and grounded in both emotional and nervous-system regulation.
Somatic Therapy
Focuses on how trauma is held in the body, helping release tension, reduce pain, and restore a sense of physical safety through gentle body-based awareness.
Polyvagal-Informed Therapy
Supports regulation of the nervous system by understanding stress responses and building a greater sense of calm, connection, and safety.
Self-Regulation Skills
Practical tools to help you manage anxiety, overwhelm, and emotional reactivity both inside and outside of sessions.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Helps identify and change unhelpful thought patterns that maintain fear, avoidance, or self-blame after an accident.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
Provides skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and coping during moments of intense anxiety or emotional overwhelm.
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
Combines mindfulness and cognitive strategies to help you relate differently to anxious thoughts and reconnect with the present moment.
